APOSTOLATE WORK OF HOME

“Our individual and collective efforts towards alleviating
the fate of the least of our brethren are always highly appreciated.
Perhaps, had we a scientific framework or a concerted and systematic effort in the direction of social services for the poorest of the poor, we would have turned a seemingly hopeless humanity into a positive workforce”. (Editorial News Vol 1, No 2, March 1997)

The above quote is from the Editorial of the early magazines of Home News Vol. 2 of 1997. It calls for communal effort in tackling the hopeless nature of the ills in our society. These ills are seen and tackled in the apostolate. This apostolate is mainly aimed at rewriting the life history of the destitute, poorest of the poor and vulnerable groups in the society. These groups include:

Abandoned and orphaned children
Mentally-challenged people
Young mothers – young unmarried girls rejected and ostracized from their families due to unplanned pregnancy
Young girls are ostracized and driven away by their relatives due to their refusal to accept forced/exchanged marriages
Alleged witches - elderly and aged women abandoned and ostracized by their family and relatives alleging witch-crafting
The Aged men and women without caring/known relatives
Street Boys and Girls
Women of easy virtue
HIV+ and AIDs clients
Vulnerable poor village women undergoing Skill Acquisition training.
Lepers, prisoners and poor villagers visitation

Abandoned and Orphaned Children

Human life is precious and deserves preservation at every stage. Orphaned children, in particular, require extra care and attention. Our organization ensures these children receive necessities and maternal care while raised in a God-fearing, disciplined environment. We strive to be positive role models for them.

Additionally, our association has intervened to save children from mentally ill mothers, providing them with a safe and nurturing environment. These children, who were once exposed to extreme poverty and hardship, are now being rehabilitated and integrated into family life.

We also offer foster care services, where children are placed with loving families who provide the care and affection they deserve. Meanwhile, their mothers receive medical attention and support to help them recover. We aim to give these children a second chance at a happy, healthy life.

ABANDONED YOUNG GIRLS WITH UNWANTED PREGNANCY

Every human being has the fundamental right to life, which should be respected, protected, and supported with basic needs. Destroying life at any stage is a violation of this right.

For years, young girls with unwanted pregnancies, often abandoned, have faced dangerous and harmful situations. A haven has been provided for them, offering care until delivery.

After giving birth, some are reunited with their families, while others are reintegrated into society or choose adoption. Residents learn various skills and receive counselling on sexuality and pregnancy prevention during their stay.
After completing their stay, equipped with skills learned from the centre, they will be able to secure employment, achieve self-sufficiency, and reduce their vulnerability to sexual exploitation and unintended pregnancy that can arise from unemployment.

Women of Easy virtue (Ladies)

The profession of prostitution, commonly associated with women, is often referred to as the world's oldest profession. It involves individuals, including women, engaging in sexual activities in exchange for payment.

There are different types of individuals involved in this profession, ranging from those who solicit openly on the streets to part-time professionals who may hold respected positions in society.

According to some, factors such as economic hardship, lack of parental care, and personal choices drive individuals into this line of work.

However, others argue that underlying issues like lust, indiscipline, and a lack of spiritual guidance contribute to this decision.

It's worth noting that the Bible takes a stance on prostitution. Additionally, the concept of the human body as a sacred temple is emphasized in some religious teachings.

The Bible emphasizes the importance of fleeing from sexual immorality. As a faith community, we must intensify our efforts to instill the value of sexual purity in our children from a young age.

The Anawim Home has made significant strides in rehabilitating and empowering young girls and women involved in prostitution. Through regular visits and counseling sessions, we provide them with guidance and support.

To equip them with economic independence, we offer vocational training in our on-site mini-factory. The skills taught include:

- Soap and cream making
- Candle making
- Tie and dye
- Weaving and knitting
- Catering
- Fashion designing
- Hairdressing
- Manufacturing polythene bags
- Bead making

These skills not only keep the girls engaged but also provide them with a fresh start economically, helping them break free from their past.

Mentally Challenged

Mental illness affects individuals of all ages and backgrounds. It can be triggered by various factors, including genetics, brain damage, traumatic experiences, and psychological stress. Mental illness can significantly impair a person's ability to function, interact with others, and enjoy life.

Sadly, many mentally ill individuals are left to fend for themselves, often ending up on the streets. They may appear dishevelled, malnourished, and ill, and are frequently subjected to rejection, fear, and abuse by society. This stigma can lead to the erosion of their self-respect, identity, and humanity.

We must recognize the inherent dignity and worth of these individuals and work towards creating a more compassionate and inclusive society that provides adequate support and care for those struggling with mental illness.
