HISTORY OF THE MISSIONARY SERVANTS FOR THE POOREST OF THE POOR
Missionary Servants for the Poorest of the Poor (Anawim Brothers) being part of Mother Oresoa’s vision was inspired and initiated due to the necessity of offering and keeping the male adolescents in the Home for proper upbringing in a disciplined and Christian way. Anawim Brothers comprise young men of the Catholic faith who have done their initial secondary (high) school studies and some who have indulged in some training and courses in Theology and Philosophy who are brought in to provide care and proper Catholic upbringing for the boys. They were made to live with the adolescent boys and men, teach in the schools, work on the farms and conduct some religious activities and prayers. They help form the boys into the proper lifestyle expected of Christian boys by leading them to emulate their behaviour and way of life.
Apostolates
The Brothers recruited, sometimes schemed out into priesthood. Among the groups that have been recruited for this caregiver work, are three Brothers who finally finished as Catholic Priests in another Congregation. After these, the Foundress focused more on getting the Missionary Sisters for the Poorest of the Poor (MSPP) to be approved by the Bishop of Yendi Diocese (Bishop Vincent Sowah Boi-Nai SVD).
The responsibility of caring for and guiding the adult men at Anawim Homes persists, along with managing their adolescent behaviors. Establishing a structured group to oversee these growing boys and provide spiritual services to the community is essential. Initially, plans were made to create a boys' school run by Brothers, a dream still in progress. Since April 2018, the Foundress has been dedicated to recruiting young men over 18 to continue the male aspect of the Vision and Mission. After spiritual discernment, she convened a Chapter Assembly for the Sisters, freeing up time and spiritual energy to focus on forming the Anawim Brothers with aspiring candidates.
Presently we have eleven Brothers serving in Anawim Glory Home Dukpa and Usugbenu, Uromi Diocese, Edo State. Giving their selfless service to their inmates and the Poorest of the Poor in their locality and society at large.
The Anawim Brothers Communities are fast growing by the grace of God through the intervention of Mary Mother of Perpetual Help, St. Joseph Foster Father of Jesus and husband of Mary and St. John Paul II.
About eight (8) Brothers have taken their Private Vows on the 22nd of October, 2023, therefore fully committed to this Anawim Vision, Spirit and Charisma. And more vocations are needed because the harvest is plentiful but the labourers are few. I encourage everyone to support them spiritually, morally and financially, to enable this vision and project to come to realization.
The Anawim Glory home available with Humanitarian services especially in Dukpa has 2.6 Acres of land to provide accommodation to one hundred homeless Orphans, youths, physically and mentally challenged. Already we have twelve (12) Brothers giving their selfless services, four (4) orphan boys, two (2) mentally ill patients being sheltered and cared for.
Skill and Capacity Building
The Missionary Servants for the Poorest of the Poor have embarked on various self-sustaining initiatives to support their mission. These entrepreneurial ventures include shoe-making, farming, and rosary-making, which provide economic empowerment and serve as a means of evangelization. Their fashion design project also enables them to create dignified clothing while fostering creativity and skill development. Through these endeavours, the Missionary Servants demonstrate their commitment to self-reliance, community development, and holistic ministry, ultimately enhancing their ability to serve the poorest of the poor.
